Emergency rule not for petty political gains – PM

The Emergency rule needs to be extended as the security forces continue to be stationed in the North conducting search operations. The law will not be used to fulfill petty political ambitions, Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake said.

The Premier presenting the proposal in Parliament yesterday (Jan 05) to extend the emergency rule by another month, said the entire country today enjoys the results of the humanitarian operations carried out in the North and the emergency law played a significant role to establish the victories.

The Prime Minister further said the security forces continue to recover large hauls of weapons and explosives hidden by the LTTE. The aim of the security forces is to build an environment for the people in the North to live without fear.

"The people in the North, who remained in disillusion for three decades, are now looking forward to their future with expectations. Certain groups under such a situation attempt to reverse the people-oriented programme," he said.
The Parliament yesterday extended the State of Emergency by another month with a majority of 79 votes.
