TNA fulfilling
its aims through Fonseka – Minister
Samarasinghe |
|
|
|
The
Tamil
National
Alliance’s
conditional
support
to Gen (Rtrd)
Sarath
Fonseka
shows
that the
two
parties
have
entered
into an
agreement
to
fulfill
TNA’s
long
standing
aims.
Minister
for
Disaster
Management
and
Human
Rights,
Mahinda
Samarasinghe
made
this
statement
at a
press
conference
today
(Jan 07)
at the
Media
Centre
for
National
Security.
The
Minister
stressed
that the
categorical
statement
by the
TNA
leader,
R.
Sambandan
to
support
Fonseka
shows he
is
willing
to
fulfill
TNA’s
demands
to
dismantle
the High
Security
Zone (HSZ),
withdraw
the
Emergency
regulation
and
remove
the
military,
among
other
demands
which
may go
beyond
power
sharing.
The
Minister
further
said
that
Fonseka
should
explain
to the
nation
the
nature
of the
deal
that the
two
parties
have
arrived
at. He
emphasized
those
present
at the
press
briefing
where
Mr.
Sambandan
made
this
announcement
had on
record
stating
that
Prabhakaran
is their
leader
and will
remain
so when
Tamil
Eelam
was
achieved.
It now
appears
that
Fonseka
was more
amiable
to TNA
thinking.
‘The
country
should
not be
put up
for sale
for the
purpose
of
getting
votes,’
the
Minister
stressed.
Referring
to a
newspaper
article
which
carried
TNA
leader’s
statement
that
they
were
dissatisfied
with
President
Mahinda
Rajapaksa’s
performance
in
addressing
Tamils’
grievances,
the
Minister
questioned
whether
Sambandan
was
speaking
of a
President
who
ended a
30 year
conflict
eradicating
one of
the most
ruthless
terrorist
organizations,
who
after 30
years
brought
political,
economic
and
social
stability
to the
North
and
East,
rescued
and
provided
needs
for over
200,000
civilians
used as
a human
shield
by the
LTTE and
shown
commitment
to
accelerated
development
in the
North
and
East.
Was the
understanding
between
the TNA
and
Fonseka
meant to
overturn
all of
those
achievements
and
return
towards
instability,
the
Minister
asked.
President
Mahinda
Rajapaksa’s
main
objective
is to
foster
unity
amongst
different
ethnic
communities
thus
ensuring
the
country
may
never
face a
similar
terrorist
outfit
as the
LTTE,
stressed
Minister
Samarasinghe.
