Tamil media praises govt. for speedy normalization of north

The government’s decision to open Jaffna-Kandy A9 route has come in for high appreciation in the Tamil media. It is the unanimous opinion of all Tamil newspapers that the decision to keep A9 open day and night has vastly benefited the Tamil civilians.

The Veerakesari, in today’s editorial said that opening of A9 has been a great relief to the Northern population. “Hitherto, Jaffna residents had to solely depend on air travel to come to Colombo and very few people could afford the high cost of air travel,” Veerakesari said.

Pointing out that there were many hardships for the people due to closure of road transport, the editorial added that opening of A9 has hugely benefited the common man as road transport is affordable. The paper added that the opening of the roadway would improve people-to-people interaction between the north and south.

The newspaper also expressed appreciation over the resettlement of 1862 Tamil civilians in former High Security Zones in Jaffna and the decision to release detainees. Overall, these steps have fulfilled the aspirations of the Tamil people, the editorial commented.

Sudar Oli, too, in its editorial today praised the steps such as resettlement of Tamil civilians in high security zones, reopening of A9 road and release of detainees. Although, Sudar Oli is of the opinion that the recent agreement between opposition candidate and the Tamil national Alliance (TNA) and the forthcoming presidential elections have hastened the process of normalization, the editorial has acknowledged that the steps have benefited the Tamil population. According to the newspaper, the detainees are to be released tomorrow.
