Tea plants varieties introduced

The Tea Smallholding Authority has introduced two new varieties of tea plants belonging to the TRI 3000 and 4000 series which are resistant to drought and diseases to get a better crop than the other varieties.

Steps have been taken to propagate these two new varieties of tea among cultivators through the tea plantations belonging to the Tee Shakthi Tea Factory of Mawarala as packed plants and pure cuttings. Cultivators could obtain cuttings from the newly introduced high grade tea plant species for their nurseries from this tea estate, reported Daily News.

The Mawarala Tea Plantation has already issued some 165,786 cuttings for smallholder cultivators. Also 6,000 cuttings of the new cloned 4,042 variety of tea had been issued among tea cultivators in Beralapanatara, Dampahala Tea Inspectors areas for re-planting, the report added.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa stated that the Government is ready to provide new technological vistas to the people in the Estate sector and willing to discuss the issues and the problems faced by the working class.

The Government has upgraded the infrastructure facilities in the Estate sector during the past four years. It was able to uplift the living condition of Estate workers and these programmes are continuing unabated, the President said.
