All set for forthcoming Presidential election

Returning Officers island-wide are making all necessary arrangements to conduct a free and fair Presidential election on January 26, the Election Secretariat sources said.

The Secretariat has completed the election official selection process and the selected officials are receiving training now on election duties.

All propaganda activities for the Presidential election must end at midnight next Saturday (Jan 23), the Secretariat said, adding that the police are entrusted in maintaining law and order.

An identity card is mandatory to vote at the Presidential election and the issuance of temporary identity cards will continue until next Thursday (Jan 21). Applications for temporary identity cards can be obtained from Grama Niladharis or Estate Superintendents and need to be submitted to relevant officials before next Thursday. Those who have applied for identity cards and did not receive them yet must also apply for a temporary identity card.

Meanwhile, distribution of official poll cards ended yesterday. Voters who have not yet received their official poll cards could obtain them from the nearest Post Office, the Post Master General said.
