Special State hospital to treat infertility

The Government is making arrangements to set up a special state hospital to treat infertile persons and make arrangements to legalize surrogacy.

A report of a study, conducted by the Kandy Teaching Hospital has been handed over to the Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry. It has made several recommendations including setting up a special hospital for fertility treatment, reported Daily News.

Once the hospital is established, arrangements will be made to reduce the number of illegal abortions by allowing unmarried mothers to have their babies safely in the same hospital. They will be legally assisted to give their infants in adoption to infertile couples, the report added.

According to the study by Kandy Teaching Hospital around 250,000 infertile families or 15 percent of the total number of families in Sri Lanka are infertile. Around 80 percent of the infertile families suffer from various health and social problems such as depression, drug addiction, diabetes and heart aliments resulted by infertility, the report further stated.
