Rs.10mn fishing equipment for resettled IDPs

The Government has distributed free fishing equipment and boats worth nearly Rs.10mn, among the newly resettled fishing community in Vallaipadu in Pooneryn, Kilinochchi under the Uthuru Wasanthaya programme.

Accordingly, 80 fishing boats and fishing gears were distributed among fishermen yesterday (Jan. 18), reported Daily News.

The Northern Provincial Council had released funds for these items which were distributed on the directive of Senior Presidential Advisor, Basil Rajapaksa, MP, Chairman of the Presidential Special Task Force on Rehabilitation and Resettlement to support a sustainable fishing livelihood programme in the Vallaipadu region.

The Government lifted restrictions on fishing in the seas off the Eastern coast, on Dec. 31, last year. Hence, fishermen were free to engage in fishing in that area excluding the High Security Zones in the Trincomalee Harbour. They were also permitted to leave and return from fishing at any hour of the day.

The Government also removed fishing restrictions in the North in June, last year to increase fish production and marketing.
