SL's first mega solar power project soon

Sri Lanka will build its first ever large scale grid connected 500 Kw solar power plant from Korea which is to be built in Buruthankanda in Hambantota District.

The Government signed a MoU yesterday (Jan. 20), with the Korean Government to reach this goal.

Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority, which licenses and promotes renewable energy use in the country, will run the plant after it is built with the help of Korea.

The Korean International Co-operation Agency will give 4.5 million US dollars as an outright grant and the SLSEA will sell the power to the Ceylon Electricity Board, and use the revenue to promote rural electrification.

The project will start this year and will get it operational within one year.

The government has also taken action to get a 400kW demonstration solar plant from Japan, which will also be built at the same location.
