Tight security for tomorrow's election

The Police department plans to deploy a heavy contingent of police officers to prevent violent poll related incidents before and after the Presidential election tomorrow to ensure the safety of the public.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mahinda Balasooriya said a contingent of 85,000 police officers will be deployed to maintain law and order. Out of which 65,000 were deployed for election duty from yesterday (Jan 24).

The IGP said that each polling station will have two to three police officers on duty. The armed forces personnel have also been called to assist the police officers in the Northern and the Eastern provinces.

The Elections Department will deploy over one hundred thousand public officers to election related activities who will report to respective polling centres from today (Jan.25).  Over 14.8 million voters are eligible to exercise their franchise.

Voters can produce national identity cards, passports, driving license, pensioners’ ID cards or any other valid document for voting.  The Elections Commissioner requested the voters to cast their votes as early as possible tomorrow.  The voting will begin at 7 am clock tomorrow and will end by 4.00 pm.
