Clear election result an opportunity for lasting peace - Solheim

The clear result of the election gives President Rajapaksa a historic opportunity to lay the foundation for lasting peace in the country, said Norwegian Environment and International Development Minister, Erick Solheim in his message congratulating President Mahinda Rajapaksa on his re- election.

“I would like to congratulate President Rajapaksa. Norway and Sri Lanka enjoy close and longstanding bilateral relations. We intend to continue our cooperation with the Government and people of Sri Lanka to promote lasting peace and development,” Solheim said.

To achieve sustainable peace in Sri Lanka, a political solution must be found that safeguards the rights of all the country’s minority groups, including the Tamils, he further stated.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg has also sent a letter of congratulations to President Rajapaksa.

Meanwhile, the Myanmar Prime Minister, General Thein Sein has congratulated President Rajapaksa.

"It is my firm belief that the existing traditional bonds of friendship and understanding between our two countries will be further enhanced and strengthened during your next tenure of office", he stated.
