Lanka to produce own thyroxin

Sri Lanka is to produce its entire requirement of Thyroxin tablets from next month. The State Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Corporation (SPMC) will produce the first consignment of Thyroxin tablets which will be distributed among all State hospitals and to the market.

Sri Lanka annually imported 24 million tablets from UK and Argentina to fulfill the requirement. During the recent past, there were unavoidable delays in the import process which caused a Thyroxin tablet shortage. Considering this fact Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry took a decision to manufacture this drug in Sri Lanka, reported Daily News.

The country had to spend Rs.10 million every month to import Thyroxin.

Under this program it will cost only Rs.5 million to produce the country’s Thyroxin requirements, the report added.
