Project for Jaffna Dutch Fort conservation

 

The Ministry of Cultural Affairs and National Heritage plans to implement the conservation project of the Ancient Dutch Fort in Jaffna with the help of the Government of the Netherlands.

The first phase of this project is scheduled to be completed by 2012. A sum of Rs.62.1 million will be allocated by the Shares Heritage Fund of the Government of the Netherlands which works out to 60% of the total estimate for the project costing Rs.104.5 million. The balance 40% amounting to Rs.42.4 million will be from local funds.

Since May 2006 nineteen conservation projects have already been implemented with the financial assistance of Rs.702 million granted by the Government of the Netherlands under the Sri Lanka - Netherlands Cultural Cooperation Programme. The projects were aimed at creating employment opportunities and thereby promoting the economic situation of the people through the development of the Tourism Industry in the southern region that was devastated by the Tsunami.

In addition, the project for the conservation of the Old Dutch Naval Commissioner's House in Trincomalee under Netherlands assistance is being implemented at a cost of Rs.75 million.
