New project to improve graduate employability

 

Cabinet granted approval to a memorandum of understanding submitted by President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Minister of Finance to enter into a financing agreement with the International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank to borrow Special Drawing Rights 25.6 million (approximately USD 40 million or Rs 4.5 billion) for the implementation of the 'Higher Education for the Twenty First Century' Project.

The objective of the project is to accord high priority to improve the employability of graduates in areas where there is high graduate unemployment such as the Arts, Humanities, General Sciences, and the External Degree Programmes. Accordingly, the project will assist to improve IT and English language skills, and soft skills such as the ability to work in teams, industriousness, entrepreneurship and good communication.

The project will also pay special attention to the development of higher education institutions in the lagging regions, particularly in the Northern and the Eastern Provinces.

The project will commence in July 2010 and is expected to be completed in December 2015.
