Coconut production to be doubled by 2015

The Plantation Industries Ministry has taken action to provide five coconut seedlings for 3.5 million families in the country with the aim of doubling the coconut production in the country by 2015.

Under this programme, 10 million coconut seedlings have already been distributed. Another 10 million coconut seedlings will also be distributed in Divisional Secretary’s Divisions next year, reported Daily News.

Action has also been taken to distribute coconut seedlings among public servants under the relevant project. Recently, the Ministry provided 1,000 coconut seedlings to employees of Bank of Ceylon Head Office in Kandy, the report said.

Researches have identified these coconut seedlings as high yielding varieties. The Coconut Cultivation Board provides instructions for cultivation.
