transport rail service after 20 yrs |
|
|
|
The
Colombo
Fort
Railway
Station
commenced
a
container
transport
rail
service
under
the
President’s
initiative
to
broaden
consumer
transport
facilities
through
railways,
yesterday
(Feb
14).
Sri
Lanka
Railways
resumed
this
service
after a
lapse of
nearly
20
years.
This
will
reduce
the
traffic
jams and
travelling
cost
compared
to
transportation
on
roads.
A
special
train
carrying
17
containers
which
contained
building
equipment,
left the
Colombo
Fort
Railway
Station
to
Thandikulam,
the
Railways
Department
said.
The Fort
Station
will
transport
approximately
1000
containers
through
this
service,
a
spokesman
said.
This
profitable
system
will be
used to
transport
food and
other
goods in
the
future.
