Accommodation for railway commuters

The Government has taken action to resume the provision of overnight accommodation to commuters at railway stations, with a view of providing better facilities to people.

Rooms could be reserved initially at Anuradhapura, Galle, and Kandy. The railway stations in Batticaloa and Trincomalee will also provide this facility soon, said the General Manager Railways, V. P. Wijesekera.

Following numerous requests by rail commuters and domestic as well as foreign tour organizations, Minister of Transport Dullas Alhapperuma directed that action be taken to refurbish and reopen the available rooms for the benefit of railway commuters, he added.

Those involved in tourism had requested the Minister to expand the services to other Railway Stations at tourist locations to generate additional revenue required by the Department to maintain railway stations and railway quarters, the General Manager said.
