Maha Sangha Convention postponed

The Maha Sangha Convention that was to be held next Thursday (Feb.18) at the historic Maha Maluwa of the Sri Dalada Maligawa has been postponed indefinitely, the Chief Prelates of the four sects of the Buddhist clergy said in a statement in Kandy yesterday (Feb.16).

The Maha Nayaka Theras of the four main sects said the decision to postpone the Convention was made taking into consideration the inconvenience that would be caused to the public who come to worship the Sri Dalada Maligawa as well as to the Maha Sangha.

The Maha Nayaka Theras also said that from ancient times the Maha Sangha had advised the rulers on good governance for the benefit of the people and at the present times too they would continue to play the same role.

Signatories are the Most Ven. Udugama Sri Buddha Rakkithabhidana Mahanayaka Thera of Asgiri Maha Viharaya, Most Ven. Tibbotuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangalabhidana Mahanayaka Thero of Malwatu Maha Viharaya, Most Ven. Weweldeniye Medhalankara Mahanayaka Thero of Ramanna Nikaya and Most Ven. Dawuldena Gnannissara Mahanyaka Thero of Amarapura Nikaya.
