British tourist arrivals up

The Tourism Development Authority said that there has been a 25 percent rise in tourist arrivals from the UK since the end of the war on terrorism, reported BBC.

Figures also show that tourist arrivals in Sri Lanka rose by nearly 32 percent in January. Sanjika Perera, Director of Sri Lanka Tourist Board Operation in the UK and Ireland said that the first winter season since the end of the war against terrorism has seen a huge increase in the interest in Sri Lanka.

He also pointed out that the majority of tourists from the UK have been arriving from London's two major airports; Heathrow and Gatwick, though a considerable number have arrived from Manchester, BBC said.

“There does not seem to be any impact" by the "boycott Sri Lanka" campaign unsuccessfully carried-out by sections of the Tamil Diaspora in England, he said.

The Sri Lankan Government said that the increasing demand from the UK has been facilitated by the relaxation of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Travel advisory as well as the opening up of major tourist attractions, such as Yala National Park and Arugam Bay, which were closed due to security reasons for years during Sri Lanka’s fight against terrorism.
