SL Community Forestry Programme implemented

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has taken steps to implement the Sri Lanka Community Forestry Programme from 2010 to 2014, with financing of Aus $ 4.54 million from Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) as a grant and the necessary counterpart funding of Rs.80 million as Foreign Aid related Domestic funds from the Government of Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lanka-Australia Natural Resource Management Project (SLNRMP) was designed in line with National Forest Policy, commenced its operations in February 2003 and was jointly funded by the Government of Sri Lanka and the Australian Government for a 6 year period up to January 2009.

This project has greatly contributed in enhancing the livelihood of the participating communities, and has established links with a broad range of stakeholders working in the natural resource management sector in Sri Lanka.

The Project also assisted in improving the capacity of the Forest Department and other service providers on mobilizing the communities for participatory resources management programmes. Hence, this programme is also in line with the Mahinda Chinthana Programme, the Haritha Lanka Programme and the National Environmental Action plan for 2008 to 2012.
