Army expedites de-mining process in North

 

Sri Lanka Army has expedited the mine clearing operations along the A-9 Road from Paranthan to Elephant Pass and to Muhamalai to accelerate the IDP resettlement.

"Around 1,000 army de-mining troops have already cleared approximately 200sq km in the Jaffna, Killinochchi, Mullaitivu and Mannar districts.

The Sri Lanka Army said its de-miners are also active in the north of Thunukkai, Manthivu, Oddusudan and Kokkavil.
The de-mining process has been completed in most parts of the Killinochchi district.

The UNCHR has provided five de-mining flail machines while the Japanese Government has funded around US$ 2.1 million.
Another US$ 6 million was provided by the US Government for the humanitarian de-mining activities in the North.

The Indian Government too had extended support in the de-mining process sending logistical and manpower assistance to expedite the process.

The Australian Government recently donated five de-mining machines worth Rs.250 million to carry out the de-mining process, the Ministry of Defence website said.
The Government of China yesterday donated another stock of de-mining equipment worth Rs.50 million.
