New Police unit to probe misuse of Rajapaksa name

A new police investigation unit will be set up to inquire into complaints of alleged misconduct of organized groups and individuals who engage in deceiving people by using the names of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa and their family members.

Police Spokesman Prishantha Jayakody said that these organized groups and individuals constantly use the names of the President and Defence Secretary as their relatives or close friends.

They easily deceive the public and try to fulfill their fraudulent purposes by damaging the reputation of the President and Defence Secretary.

The new unit will be set up to work with the Colombo Crime Division and SP Anura Ekanayake will be the chief of the Unit under the direct supervision of SSP N.K. Illangakoon.

"This move was taken after a lengthy observation on how to nab these criminals who defame the reputation of the VIPs," said Jayakody.

The public can give information regarding such organized groups or individuals to Deputy Inspector General (crime) - 011 2441197, Special Investigative Unit - 011 2333496, Fax 011 2333496.
