President sends
deepest condolences to Chile |

President Mahinda Rajapaksa sent a message of condolence to his Chile counterpart, President Michelle Bachelet yesterday (March 3), on the tragedies caused by the earthquake in Chile. President Rajapaksa said," as a nation that was touched by a tragedy of similar magnitude five years ago, Sri Lanka fully understands the pain and the sorrow that you must feel."
The President said that Sri Lanka associates itself with the international community's efforts to support the people of Chile at this hour of need.
The 8.8-magnitude earthquake that rocked Chile on February 27 claimed more than 700 lives.

Excellency
I have been deeply saddened to learn about the tragic and tremendous loss of life and extensive devastation caused by the recent earthquake in Chile. On behalf of the people and the Government of Sri Lanka, let me express my deepest condolences to the families who lost their loved ones. As a nation that was touched by a tragedy of similar magnitude five years ago, Sri Lanka fully understands the pain and the sorrow that you must feel.
Sri Lanka associates itself with the international community's efforts to support the people of Chile at this hour of need.
The wish of all Sri Lankans is that the people of Chile will find the strength to overcome this tragedy and rebuild their country in the shortest possible time.
