Coconut oil production in North

Under the guidance of the Ministry of Plantation Industries, the Coconut Development Authority is to set up 10 large scale coconut oil production facilities in the North.

Initiated as a part of the Uthuru Wasanthaya programme, this aims to uplift the lives of the people in the region including the recently resettled civilians. It is expected to provide direct and indirect employment opportunities for around 30,000 families in the North.

Ten plants will be set up in Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Alampil, and Palei in the Northern Province with the assistance of the private sector at a cost of 30 million rupees, the CDA said.

The plants are expected to produce 20 metric tons of coconut oil daily when the production commences in 2011.
