Coconut cultivation promoted in North

 

The Government has taken action to promote coconut cultivation in the North, at a cost of 20 million rupees.

Under this programme, the Coconut Cultivation Board (CCB) will provide coconut saplings to every household in the North.

The CCB has informed that coconut cultivation has been initiated in 2000 acres. It said that 1 40,000 saplings will be provided for this programme while 60,000 saplings will be provided for home gardens. The Coconut Cultivation Board said that the required saplings can be obtained from the nurseries in Achchuweli and Kilinochchi.

Meanwhile, the Coconut Development Authority is setting up 10 large scale coconut oil production facilities in the North, under the guidance of the Ministry of Plantation Industries.
Under this, ten plants will be set up in Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Alampil, and Palei in the Northern Province at a cost of 30 million rupees.
The plants are expected to produce 20 metric tons of coconut oil daily when the production commences in 2011.
