The Commando Regiment celebrated its 30th anniversary on March 15. A special ceremony was held at the Commando Regiment Training Camp in Ganemulla under the patronage of the Secretary of Defence to pay tribute to the war heroes. A commemorating statue of the Commando Soldiers was also unveiled.
The families of officers and soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the fight against terrorism were also given tribute at the ceremony.
The Commando Regiment was initiated in 1977. Lt. General J.E.D Perera, founder of Commandos, issued a call to combating terrorism in Sri Lanka and a decision was made by the Army HQ to raise a special counter-terrorist unit.
On 9 February 1978 the first commando training course commenced, and 24 other ranks were drawn from the Armoured Corps, Artillery, Engineers, Sri Lanka Light Infantry, Sinha Regiment and the Gemunu Watch on a volunteer basis.
Commandos have committed themselves for many military operations in defeating terrorism. Thoppigala operations and Reconnaissance missions were significant among those operations.
