Sri Lanka’s poverty level drops

Sri Lanka’s poverty level has dropped by nine percent to 15.2% which was 24% in 2007. The main reason for this is the village centered development projects carried out under the Gama Neguma programme, stated W.K.K. Kumarasiri, Secretary of the Nation Building Ministry.

The Government is continuing to implement such programmes in the future, he further stated at a media briefing.

The secretary added that the poverty level in Hambantota has reduced to 12 %.

Rural produce can now be brought to markets easily due to improved transportation as a total of 43,000 kilometres of rural roads were built with concrete surfaces. Thus, higher income levels have been reported from the rural sector.

Another reason for increased income levels is due to the use of new methods for agriculture and use of carbonic fertilizer which reduce the cost of cultivation.

Due to the rehabilitation of micro irrigation reservoirs and drinking water supply projects, there is increased access to irrigation and drinking water, while paddy lands lying fallow had been brought under the plough.
