New parliament will attend to constitutional reforms - GL

The next new parliament will pay attention specifically to constitutional reforms. Various shortcomings seen in the existing constitution would be eliminated from the next constitution under a new government, stated Prof. G.L. Peiris, Minister of Export Development and International Trade at the weekly cabinet briefing yesterday (25 March).

Several shortcomings in the electoral system, severe competition between political parties, the inadequate relations between the political representatives and the people in their constituencies, have prompted the need for a new constitution, he said.

In order to constitute a strong Parliament and change the existing political culture, the Government expects that the people will elect a government with a two thirds majority, Minister added.

After the eradication of terrorism, many countries have assisted the sustainable development of the country, he further stated.

Accordingly, funds of USD 290m from China, USD 311m from Japan, USD 283m from Asian Development Bank and USD 202m from the World Bank have been given to Sri Lanka to achieve development goals.

The Minister pointed out that measures have been taken to develop infrastructure facilities utilizing these foreign donations.
