The Government will provide boat services from Jaffna to Pooneryn, particularly for Government servants.
Initial reconnaissance activities were initiated to envisage the boat service project last week, reported Daily News.
People from Jaffna will take at least two and half hours to reach Pooneryn by road. They have to travel from Jaffna to Elephant Pass, Paranthan, Jayapuram and to Pooneryn, the report added. With the new service the time taken to travel will be much less.
The boat service is time-saving and less fatiguing to the travelers from Jaffna to Pooneryn unlike the bus service, said Northern Province Governor G. A. Chandrasiri.
Government servants like teachers, hospital servants, Urban Council officers, Provincial Council officers etc. will be benefit for this project, he added.
Initially, the boat service will start from Kalmunai point to Jaffna town by next month. Two boats will be in service to transport the passengers. Fishermen Association in Jaffna and Pooneryn will assist the authorities, the report further stated.
