Japan assists Sri Lanka’s infrastructure projects

The Government of Japan extended its assistance to Sri Lanka for infrastructure projects recently by providing a loan package amounting to Yen 36,664 million (approximately Rs.46 billion) and a grant aid amounting to Yen 2,298 million (approximately Rs.3 billion).

This Loan Package will finance four major infrastructure projects which are Provincial/Rural Road, Eastern Province Water Supply, Kandy City Wastewater Management Project and additional financing for “Upper Kotmale Hydro Power Project”.

Provincial/Rural Road Development Project will restore 350 kms of provincial roads in the Central and Sabaragamuwa Provinces, and about 300 kms of rural roads in Eastern Province.

The Eastern Province Water Supply Development Project will help to develop water supply facilities in the Ampara District and small scale water supply facilities in remote areas of the Eastern Province.

Kandy City Wastewater Management Project will improve the living environment by constructing the first sewerage system in the World Heritage city of Kandy and by promoting the installation of private toilet facilities in densely populated and low income areas.

Upper Kotmale Hydro Power Project will add 150 MW to the national grid to reduce the demand-supply gap with cost efficient and sustainable energy, eventually contributing to economic development in Sri Lanka.

The Grant project for the “Improvement of Central Functions of Jaffna Teaching Hospital” covers the construction of facilities to enhance the central functions of the hospital such as, Operating Theatre Complex, Central Supply and Sterilizing Department, Intensive Care Units, Central Laboratory Complex and Central Facilities for Diagnostic Imaging, as well as the procurement and installation of necessary medical equipments.
