Moscow attack a horrible reminder of continuing terrorist violence - President

President Mahinda Rajapaksa expressing his concern and deep sorrow at the suicide bomb attack at two Moscow subway stations yesterday (29) stated that this attack is a ‘horrible reminder of the continuing terrorist violence that affects the world today, which needs concerted action by the world community to eradicate with the greatest speed, irrespective of political or regional interests’.

‘As a country that has suffered enormously under terrorism for nearly three decades, Sri Lanka is well aware of its harsh realities, especially how it threatens the progress of a nation and peace and tranquility among people’, the President further stated in his message to the President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Medvedev.

We also recall with gratitude the constant and significant assistance that the Russian Federation extended to Sri Lanka to achieve success in our battle against separatist terrorism, he added.

According to AP, 36 people were killed in the two suicide bombings on Moscow's subway system yesterday. Officials say two female suicide bombers blew themselves up on trains as the subway was packed with rush-hour passengers Monday morning, the report further said.

Following is the full text of the message :

His Excellency Dmitry Medvedev
President of the Russian Federation

Your Excellency

I hasten to express to you and the people of the Russian Federation our grave concern and deep sorrow at the suicide bomb attack at two Moscow subway stations yesterday.

I wish through Your Excellency’s good offices to send a message of condolence to the families of those killed and extend our prayers and sincere good wishes for the speedy recovery of those injured in this brutal attack.

We see this attack as a horrible reminder of the continuing terrorist violence that affects the world today, which needs concerted action by the world community to eradicate with the greatest speed, irrespective of political or regional interests.

As a country that has suffered enormously under terrorism for nearly three decades, Sri Lanka is well aware of its harsh realities, especially how it threatens the progress of a nation and peace and tranquility among people. We also recall with gratitude the constant and significant assistance that the Russian Federation extended to Sri Lanka to achieve success in our battle against separatist terrorism.

The people of Sri Lanka join me in wishing Your Excellency and the Government of the Russian Federation every success in its continued battle to defeat terrorism in all its forms, and express our solidarity with the Russian people in this important task.

Be assured, Excellency, of my highest regard.

Mahinda Rajapaksa
