Research institute for western medicine

The Government will set up a research institute on western medicine; an initiative by the Ministry of Industrial Development in collaboration with the University of Colombo.

The Government will provide a sum of Rs.70 million to purchase necessary technical equipment. The Association of Producers of Drugs and Medical Equipment will also provide financial support for the project.

Sri Lanka annually spends over 20 billion rupees to import western medicines. The aim of the new research institute is to produce western medicines locally. After completion of the construction of the Research Institute, Sri Lanka will be able to save a considerable sum of foreign income spent on medicine imports.
