The Sri Lankan Air Force has ventured into commercial operations with Helitours becoming a popular mode of transportation between the north and the south of the country. Helitours, the premier domestic air service in Sri Lanka, completed its 200th flight on March 24 since resumption of its operations on July 21 last year.
In early 1980's, the Helitours operations slowed down and eventually stopped with military operations against the LTTE.
Helitours has since last year transported nearly 2,669 passengers.
The Air Force through Helitours has opened a new gateway for people who want to fly to and from the Peninsula with ease without long delays or relying on unscrupulous tour operators, Helitours said in a statement.
Through Helitours, the Sri Lankan Air Force offers scheduled flights to Palaly in Jaffna and China Bay in Eastern Trincomalee.
Helitours also offer a range of other services. It undertakes 'Heli-lifts' to any part of the country or to any off-shore platforms.
Special arrangements have also been made by Helitours to transport patients, the statement said.
The revenues generated by the flight service are directed towards development activities in the country.
