President Mahinda Rajapaksa has instructed his officials to take steps to fulfil the aspirations of the former LTTE youths who were rehabilitated. A total of 1,300 ex-LTTE combatants (both male and female) who were arrested by the Security Forces and subsequently rehabilitated were handed over to their parents at a ceremony at the Pumbai Madu military camp in Vavuniya in the presence of the President yesterday evening.
The President symbolically handed over three such youths, Yogeshwaran Aravindan, Hinduraja and Hindur to their parents. These youth had been forcibly recruited by the LTTE to be used for terrorist activities.
During their detention they were given educational and vocational training to equip themselves to earn a livelihood when they enter society.
President Rajapaksa also opened a computer centre set up for further training of the youth who underwent computer training during their period of rehabilitation.
Virtusa Digital Computer Firm donated computers worth Rs 25 million for this.
The fervent plea of these youth to the President was to give them assistance to further their education and engage in self-employment.
The President instructed his officials to take steps to fulfil the youths’ aspirations.
Northern Province Governor Major General G.A. Chandrasiri, Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga and Northern Commander Major General M. Hathurusinghe along with all Divisional Heads of the Army were also present.
