Courts martial against Fonseka adjourned

 

The two Courts Martial at Navy Headquarters hearing charges against General (rtd) Sarath Fonseka adjourned their sittings on Tuesday (6).

The first Court Martial, presided by Major General H.L Weerathunga was to try Fonseka on charges against his participation in political work while in active service. After its maiden sittings on 16 March, it was adjourned until today (6). Major General A.L.R Wijethunga and Major General D.R.A.B Jayathilake are serving as other members. The sittings are to resume on 5th May 2010.

The second Court Martial, reconvened to hear charges, related to General Fonseka’s violation of military procurement procedures after its first sitting on 17th March 2010 also resumed Tuesday (6) afternoon to proceed with the tribunal, presided by Major General M.P. Peiris.

Major General S.W.L Daulagala and Major General M. Hathurusinghe were the other members in the tribunal where Rear Admiral W.W.J.S Fernando served as Judge Advocate for both Courts Martial. The second Court Martial continued its hearings till 5.00 p.m. today (6) and was subsequently adjourned until April 9th 2010.
