UK announces further aid

The United Kingdom announced a further £1 million in humanitarian assistance to Sri Lanka in addition to £12.5 million committed over the past eighteen months to support the people of Sri Lanka recover from the conflict.

“The UK has stood by the people of Sri Lanka in their time of need. We were on the ground helping the government with their demining efforts, provided emergency shelter, provided transport to move IDPs to their areas of origin and helped humanitarian agencies to transport food convoys," said the British High Commissioner, Dr. Peter Hayes.

"This one million is a further indication of our commitment to help Sri Lanka recover and prosper in the new era of peace," he said.

The UK has funded demining activities in the Vanni, provided shelter, food, sanitation and transport facilities and emergency relief for thousands of internally displaced persons, the British High Commission said.

This extra million announced on March 31 will be used to further fund experienced humanitarian agencies to use their technical expertise to help vulnerable families recover their lives and livelihoods. This work complements ongoing UK support to the United Nations projects which address basic shelter, water, sanitation and agriculture, the High Commission further stated.
