Iran to buy more Sri Lanka tea

 

The Iranian Government yesterday decided to increase the volume of Sri Lanka tea purchase from 30 million to 50 million kilograms.

The Iranian Government's decision was conveyed to Plantation Industries Minister D.M. Jayaratne by Iranian envoy in Colombo Mahmud Rahimi Gorji at a meeting held at the Ministry premises yesterday (07 April).

Sri Lanka exports over 30 million kilograms of tea to Iran annually and has become the fourth largest tea buyer from Sri Lanka. The Iranian Ambassador has apprised the Minister that this decision is a part of Iran's strategy to forge closer ties with Sri Lanka in the field of economy. He has apprised the Minister that the Iranian Government is ready to promote Sri Lankan tourism industry too.

The envoy told the Minister that the Iranian Government is of the view that Sri Lanka is on the right track to economic and social development and Iran is always standing up for the support of Sri Lanka's development effort.
