The European Union, Indonesia and US Assistant Secretary of State, Robert O. Blake have congratulated the President and the government on the election victory.
Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission said in a statement, "I congratulate President Rajapaksa and the UPFA on their success. I also welcome the fact that these elections took place in a largely calm atmosphere".
"The EU looks forward to working with the newly elected Sri Lankan government in the implementation of its ambitious political agenda including national reconciliation", the statement added.
“The EU has noted reports of incidents on Election Day and trusts that the authorities will take appropriate action to ensure that these are properly investigated and resolved,” it further said.
US Assistant Secretary of State, Robert O. Blake said the results of these elections really open the way for President Rajapaksa to take important action to unify the country and get it back on a path of growth, reported Independent Television Network.
He further said that Sri Lanka's first peacetime parliamentary polls won in a landslide by the ruling party can pave the way for President Rajapaksa to bring prosperity to the nation.
The US and India earlier congratulated the President and ruling United People Freedom Alliance (UPFA) on the sweeping victory.
Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia, Djafar Husein congratulating the President and the UPFA stated, "Indonesia, as a friend of Sri Lanka, looks forward to continue and to strengthen our two countries relations and cooperate in the future for the prosperity of our two people".
"Please accept, Your Excellency, the assurance of my highest esteem and my best wishes for your continued good health and personal well- being", the statement further added.
