President and UNP leader discuss reopening of Parliament

President Mahinda Rajapaksa and United National Party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe met this morning at the President’s House.

This was the first meeting between the President and the UNP leader since the General elections held on April 8. The meeting, lasting about 45 minutes was friendly and cordial, Presidential Secretariat sources said.

The parliamentary session is scheduled to be opened on April 22 and the new Speaker will be elected after the opening address by President Rajapaksa. Of the 225 Members of Parliament (MPs), 180 have been already gazetted. The 16 remaining MPs from Kandy and Trincomalee districts and the 29 MPs from the National Lists will be gazetted after the re-polling in the two districts on April 20.
