Govt to boost Northern fishing

The Government is to provide Rs.100 million to 50 selected fishermen in Jaffna to re-commence their livelihoods and develop the fishing industry in the Northern Province.

“The IDP fishermen who moved from Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi will be given priority in the selection process. They will be provided with a boat (with out boat motor), fishing gear, etc”, Northern Province Governor Major General GA Chandrasiri said.

The project will be implemented in three stages. In each stage 100 fishermen will be granted soft loans to improve their livelihood. At the first stage, 50 fishermen will be selected. Another 50 fishermen will be chosen in the second phase of the first stage. They will be given a six month period to commence fishing under the supervision of the Northern Provincial Council. After six months, the fishermen should pay back the loan in installments to the BoC. The project will be implemented in May.

Five boat yards in Jaffna which were abandoned due to terrorist activities will be put into operation to manufacture boats.
