Govt to further boost fishing industry

The Government is taking many measures to uplift the fisheries industry in the Eastern Province where fishing is the people’s leading profession.

Reconstruction of the Codbay Fisheries harbour has commenced for the people to engage in their normal livelihood, with the assistance of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The Government is also to implement an inland fishing project using the Muthiyankattu tank in Mullaitivu along the Eastern part of A-9 Road for over 200 families to be benefited.

Quoting the Northern Province Governor Major General G.A. Chandrasiri, Daily News reported that the Muthiyankattu tank which was abandoned for several years in Oddusudan will be used for inland fishing, under the Northern development program.

Muthiyankattu tank is a massive tank about 20 meters in depth. Nearly 200 families in the area benefit from this project. Initially, 40 families will be provided 40 canoes for inland fishing in the Muthiyankattu tank, the Governor said.

Many tanks in the Mullaitivu District will be renovated to develop inland fishing. The Governor said inland fishing has begun in Pooneryn and Thunukkai while around 50 families were provided with 50 canoes.
