President meets Bhutan PM |

President Mahinda Rajapaksa held bilateral talks with the Prime Minister of Bhutan, Jigmi Y.Thinley yesterday (26 April) at the Sri Lanka House in the SAARC Village, Thimphu.
The Prime Minister praised the President on his determination and intelligence in achieving peace after defeating the ruthless terrorist organization, LTTE.
He also stated that he joins in the joy of freedom felt by the Sri Lankan people for achieving peace and sustainable development after suffering for nearly thirty years by the hands of the LTTE.
The Prime Minister of Bhutan also conveyed his gratitude to President Rajapaksa for his attendance at the SAARC Summit to commence tomorrow (28 April).
President Rajapaksa pointed out that SAARC needs to be advanced as a people friendly organization which fulfills people’s needs and stressed that the support of all is needed in order to achieve this.
SAARC should also pay special attention to rural development and ensure that the rural community too benefit from globalization, the President stated.
The two leaders discussed ways of expanding bilateral relations in the areas religion and culture, both having predominantly Buddhist communities. Attention was given to the advancement of tourism in keeping with Buddhist principle. President Rajapaksa pointed out that this would undoubtedly increase the friendship between the two nations.
The Prime Minister of Bhutan thanked the Sri Lankan President for the assistance to Bhutan in human resource development in many fields including health. He also praised the President on his commitment towards successfully carrying out his duties as the Chairman of the 15th SAARC Summit held in Colombo in 2008.
The Prime Minister of Bhutan congratulated the President on the resounding victories at the Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
President Rajapaksa conveyed his gratitude to the Prime Minister for his hospitality and praised him in holding the 16th Summit in Bhutan in a grand scale at a significant landmark of SAARC reaching the 25th year of its establishment.
