President Mahinda Rajapaksa, attending the 16th SAARC Summit in Thimphu, met the Pakistan Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed yesterday (28 April).

The two Prime Ministers said that they are happy to note that the Sri Lankan Government has been able to defeat terrorism and that this is a source of encouragement for the South Asian region and indeed throughout the international community.

President Rajapaksa thanked the two neighbouring nations for their cooperation and assistance in countering the threat of terrorism.

The Prime Ministers also congratulated President Rajapaksa on his resounding victories at the recently concluded Presidential and Parliamentary Elections. They expressed their appreciation for the significant role played by Sri Lanka during its chairmanship of SAARC.

During the meeting with the two Prime Ministers, President Rajapaksa emphasised that a fundamental pillar of his re-elected administration would be the strongest possible political and economic ties with the neighbouring countries.

According to Pakistan media reports, President Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Gilani agreed to promote their relations in all fields especially in defence, trade and commerce.

Pakistani Prime Minister said that his country would continue to assist Sri Lanka in military training and fulfill its defence needs.
President Rajapaksa along with other SAARC leaders met the King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck a short while ago.
