President Mahinda Rajapaksa congratulating the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, David Cameron, stated that Sri Lanka and United Kingdom enjoy deep and long-standing historical ties.
In the current 'post-conflict phase of optimism that devotes priority to economic and social progress, reconstruction and reconciliation', he said, 'I look forward to working closely with you to further strengthen the relations and friendship between our two countries'.
I am confident that the new Government which has been formed with the support of the Deputy Prime Minister will, through your dynamic leadership, provide strong and stable direction to the United Kingdom, the President further said in his congratulatory message.
Prime Minister Cameron’s Conservatives and the smaller Liberal Democrat party struck an agreement on Wednesday to form Britain’s first coalition government since World War II (1945).
It ends 13 years of Labour rule, which began with former Prime Minister, Tony Blair's 1997 landslide victory.
At 43, Prime Minister Cameron is the youngest British Prime Minister in 200 years.
Following is text of the congratulatory letter:
The Rt. Hon. David Cameron
Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
Excellency,
It gives me great pleasure to convey to you on behalf of the people and the Government of Sri Lanka, and on my own behalf, best wishes and sincere felicitations on your assumption of duties as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
I am confident that the new Government which has been formed with the support of the Deputy Prime Minister will, through your dynamic leadership, provide strong and stable direction to the United Kingdom.
Sri Lanka and United Kingdom enjoy deep and long-standing historical ties. Today Sri Lanka has entered a post-conflict phase of optimism that devotes priority to economic and social progress, reconstruction and reconciliation. These priorities have been decisively endorsed through the strong mandate granted to my Government at the recently concluded Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
It is in this context that I look forward to working closely with you to further strengthen the relations and friendship between our two countries.
Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration.
