Serve masses first - President tells Ministers

Ministers should think of how they can help the common masses and solve their problems rather than enjoying the privileges and the honour of being a Minister, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said in Galle yesterday (13 May).

He said each Minister should be determined to do a novel thing which is beneficial for the common masses.

The President was speaking at the opening of a new Dharma Mandiraya at the Maligaspe Subadraramaya in Galle yesterday. A set of books authoured by Maligaspe Sri Subadraramaya Chief Incumbent and a book depicting the history of the temple were presented to the President.

“No Minister can say that his or her Ministry is not important. Every Ministry is very important in my concern if it does introduce a novel initiative and continues giving maximum service to the public,” he stressed.

The President added that the new Ministers are bound to carry forward the Government program to ensure the country’s prosperity. The President added that the Ministers have to get involved in everything as public servants do not discharge their duties properly. President Rajapaksa said the Ministers should allocate considerable time to attend to people’s needs.

“The people gave us a clear mandate ensuring overwhelming majority in parliament. Now we cannot tell them that we face snags or difficulties in carrying forward Government policies,” he said.

He added that the Maha Sangha has the supreme right to advise the country’s leader and the masses at large. “They can pin point shortcomings and wrongdoings of the Government and guide the entire country on the correct path,” he added.

The President said that quite large number of people in the North voted for the Government. He said the UPFA could have won the Northern Province if another 1,000 or 2,000 people expressed their support to the Government at the last general election.

He added that the UPFA’s victory is inevitable in the East too, if TVMP Leader Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan contested under the UPFA ticket.

He said the people in the North and the East have confidence in the Government.
