The Government has taken action to construct a National Performing Art Theatre in Colombo to develop Sri Lankan artistes’ talents and present their performances, at a cost of Rs.3080 Million.
The project is to provide international level infrastructure facilities with sophisticated modern hi tech facilities for professional and armature artists, researchers, foreign troops and general public to perform, train, and engage in research etc.
The structure of this building is similar to the Lotus Pond in the Polonnaruwa and will be spread over 14,000 square meters floor area. The total estimated cost of the project is Rs.3080 million. Chinese Government will provide Rs.2430mn out of the total cost of the building.
Basic facilities such as concrete mixing station, two storied temporary building, container unloading platform, electricity, water supply and soil testing were completed and construction of building already started.
The construction work which has been started in May 2006 is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
