First two solar power plants to be established

The first two solar power plants in the country will be established on a 50-acre land in Baruthakanda, Hambantota. Baruthakanda area has been declared as a Solar Power Zone.

The capacity of proposed two plants is 600kw and 500kw. Japan will provide US $ 9 million for the 9kw plant, while Korea will provide US $ 4.5 million for the 500kw plant, quoting Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SLSEA) Renewable Energy Director Athula Jayatunga Daily News reported.

The required infrastructure facilities for both plants will be provided by the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority. A power supply of 1, 237,500 kwh will be added to the National Grid, thus reducing Rs22.5 million of the annual expenses on fuel for the Ceylon Electricity Board, he added.

Power supply through the biomass is about 14mw from Dendro and waste allied sources, the Renewable Energy Director further said.
