Navy continues flood relief operations

Naval troops and boats are continuing their flood relief operations in the areas affected by floods.

As of yesterday (23), nine Naval teams and seven SLN boats remain deployed in the Gampaha, Colombo and Kalutara districts to provide relief assistance. With the ceasing of heavy rains, flood waters have now begun to recede and life is turning to normalcy.

Sri Lanka Navy deployed its personnel and craft as a response to the heavy flood situation caused by torrential rains recorded in many parts of the island.

Naval troops evacuated people to places of safety and they provided emergency relief and medical assistance to those severely affected in Divulapitiya, Kibulapitiya, Gampaha, Minuwangoda, Seeduwa, Kiribathgoda, Maharagama, Biyagama, Hanwella, Katunayake, Kotugoda, Katana, Kelaniya, Kolonnawa, Ambalangoda and Wathugedara. As a special relief measure, additional Naval teams along with SLN boats were dispatched to assist the inbound and outbound passengers of the Katunayake Airport.

Special Naval teams were also sent to Wattala, Negombo, Gampaha and Katana areas for emergency operations.

The Navy continues monitoring the situation and additional troops and craft are kept stand by for contingency deployments in case of flash floods and earth slips, SLN said.
