Dengue eradication, a national responsibility - President

Eradicating the dengue menace is a national responsibility which should be burdened by every one of us, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said.

Addressing the inaugural meeting of the Presidential Task Force on Dengue Prevention at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday, President Rajapaksa said that all segments of society from the President to the people at grassroots level should be integrated into an accelerated Dengue control drive to see the early eradication of dengue mosquitoes and breeding places from the country.

The President said Sri Lankans have faced a number of epidemics effectively throughout history and they have the strength to eradicate any type of epidemic. He stressed that everyone has to show more dedication and perseverance in the effort to eradicate the dengue menace from Sri Lanka.

The Dengue Control Task Force aims to implement special programmes island wide to control the disease.

The Task Force will incorporate the services of many institutions including the Health Ministry, Presidential Secretariat and the Defence Ministry.

According to the statistics from the Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry, the disease has been winding down in the last few months but with the recent flooding it is expected to rise again.

A total of 14,284 cases of dengue and 77 deaths from the disease have been reported so far this year.
