More SriLankan flights to Japan

SriLankan Airlines' opportunities in the Japanese market have been greatly enhanced by the revision of the bilateral agreement between Japan and Sri Lanka after 17 years.

Under the terms of the new agreement, Sri Lankan can increase its present thrice-weekly operation to Tokyo's Narita Airport up to five times a Week. The Japanese government will consider increasing this up to five times a week.

Japanese arrivals to Sri Lanka increased by 46% in the first two months of 2010, in comparison with the same period a year ago.

"The upgrading of the bilateral agreement between Sri Lanka and Japan after a 17- year period is of great significance to both Sri Lanka and Sri Lankan Airlines. Japan is a major tourism market and the Sri Lankan airline has considerable expectation from this market for the future," said Sri Senanayaka, Manager International Relations.

We can now offer Japanese consumers far more flexible and competitive fares and packages than we could in the past when our operations were seriously restricted by having only three frequencies, he said.

SriLankan Airlines is currently the only airline which operates direct flights from Japan to the Maldives, a favourite destination of Japan tourists.

SriLankan has also been granted the right to operate unlimited frequencies into any other international airport in Japan, although the airline has no immediate plans to operate to a second city in Japan. Another concession was the approval to operate code-share flights to Japanese cities with Japanese airlines or even third party airlines.

The new agreement also deals comprehensively with aspects such as security, safety, and fares, which the earlier agreement did not.
