MoU facilitates legal employment in Korea

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Labour of the Republic of Korea on 26 May to send Lankan workers to the Republic of Korea under an employment permit system.

This prevents illegal employment and provides an opportunity for Sri Lankans to work in Korea legally. Acting Minister of External Affairs, Gitanjana Gunawardena signed the MoU on behalf of the Government.

2,300 migrant workers will travel to the Republic of Korea shortly to begin their term of employment while another batch was expected to leave before March 2011.

Sri Lanka already holds a quota of 7,300 workers which is the second largest number among 15 countries under the Korean Employment Permit System. It has been noted that 19,000 Sri Lankan workers have entered Korea through this system in the past.
